Fifa is demanding that an Italian sweet company stops giving away football stickers with its products.
Lawyers for world football’s governing body told the federal high court in Germany that Ferrero had no right to use the trademark ‘WM’ – which is the German abbreviation for World Cup – in reference to next year’s tournament in South Africa.
It is believed to be the first case in which a sports governing body has acted to protect its trademarks in such a way.
Ferrero, which produces brands including Ferrero Rocher, Nutella and Tic Tac, has distributed stickers with its Hanuta and Duplo chocolate and hazelnut wafers during past tournaments featuring players from the German national team.
But Fifa argues that the company’s registration of the ‘WM’ trademark is an infringement, according to reports in South Africa.
