New Zealand Football is looking to cash in on the country’s run to next year’s World Cup finals by signing up to four new sponsors.
The All Whites qualified for the tournament for only the second time in their history after a play-off victory over Bahrain and NZF is likely to bank about NZ$10m for qualifying for the finals.
The governing body is also looking to open talks with potential sponsors who had been waiting to see whether they would make it to South Africa next year.
And NZF chief executive Michael Glading promised the money would be used wisely. “We were cautious about having a big windfall and going crazy [because] you’ve got a lot of money and you can create a lot of short-term activity and then the money runs out,” he told Reuters. “We’re very much thinking about long term.
“There have been a few companies sitting in the wings and I guess those discussions become a little more active.
“All the way through this process we have tried not to build a future based on winning one match so we have been talking about a long-term association, not just quick cash injections.
"Those days are over – it’s about forming a longer-term alliance with three or four organisations.”
