Former Renault Formula One boss Flavio Briatore has called the FIA hearing at which he was banned for life a “sham”.
Briatore was handed the ban by the World Motor Sport Council for his role in the Nelson Piquet Jr race fixing scandal at last year’s Singapore Grand Prix.
But a war of words broke out between Briatore and the FIA last week ahead of his appeal on November 24 after it emerged that the Italian was seeking to get his punishment overturned and wanted Euros 1m compensation.
The FIA criticised the “selective leaking” of parts of Briatore’s case but he defended his actions and is now claiming that his fate had been sealed before the hearing.
Briatore said in a statement: “The FIA neglects to mention that, according to declarations by one of its own vice-presidents to the media, the world council’s decision was rather the outcome of secret negotiations on the eve of the sham hearing.”
FIA vice-president Mohamed Ben Sulayem was quoted in Abu Dhabi’s National newspaper after the hearing as saying: “We are not here to hang teams. We did our negotiations before and everybody is happy with the result.”
Briatore’s appeal will be heard by France’s high court, the Tribunal de Grande Instance
