Cheltenham racecourse had to pay out £6,000 after promising racegoers who bought tickets in advance for Saturday’s meeting a full refund if an Irish-trained horse won the big race.

A marketing campaign offered punters with Club badges their money back if an Irish horse won the Paddy Power Gold Cup for the first time since 1980 in a bid to encourage advance sales.

Tranquil Sea’s victory meant that the racecourse had to refund 200 people £30 each, but a spokesman said the course had covered the risk by betting on an Irish-trained winner.

“It would have been a success even if it did cost £6,000 given the amount of publicity it generated, but in fact we placed a bet back in September to cover the risk, so it has cost us very little,” added the spokesman.
