Kerry expecting Irish Open tourism boost
 17/11/2009

Next year’s 3 Irish Open could generate up to Euros 30m for the Kerry region after the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club was confirmed as the venue for the event.

The tournament, which takes place over the bank holiday weekend of July 29 to August 1, is likely to attract a strong field as players vie for a place in next year’s Ryder Cup team and an estimated 75,000 visitors are expected to flock to Kerry to watch some of the world’s top golfers in action.

3’s sales and marketing director Elaine Carey said: “The 3 Irish Open will prove a big draw for golf fans and their families to holiday in Kerry around the tournament and to enjoy the wonderful festival atmosphere to the Bank Holiday weekend.”

Jerry O’Grady, from Killarney’s Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, added: “Killarney is delighted that it has been selected to host the 3 Irish Open in 2010. Golf has been a core element of the Kerry visitor experience for almost a century and the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce estimates that the 3 Irish Open will bring Euros 30m to Kerry businesses through tourism.

“The hospitality on offer to visiting golfers and spectators is second to none, with a superb selection of top quality accommodation, leisure activity and touring options within a few minutes drive from the course.”

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club has hosted two Irish Opens in the past – in 1991 and 1992.
