BMW announced as latest 2012 sponsor
 18/11/2009

BMW has signed up to become the official automotive partner of the London 2012 Olympics.

The German carmaker is the 24th sponsor of the Games and its sixth sustainability partner.

The top-tier sponsorship deal with see the company provide 4,000 vehicles – BMW and Mini cars, and BMW bicycles and motorcycles – to athletes, officials and staff at the event.

A spokesman said: “At Games time, BMW bicycles will be available for use by athletes in the Athletes Village and by London 2012 staff. BMW motorcycles will also be used in certain Olympic and Paralympic events.

“A proportion of the fleet will be wheelchair-accessible and BMW will convert a number of vehicles for use by disabled drivers and passengers.”

Meanwhile, Wembley’s chairman has admitted that the stadium would be affected if the new arena being built for the 2012 Olympics is retained as an 80,000-capacity venue.

David Bernstein said that there were only a maximum of 40 events a year that could fill a stadium of that size in London

A debate has raged over whether the new Olympic Stadium should stay at its full capacity after the Games or be reduced to 55,000 or 28,000 seats.

Appearing before the London Assembly’s economic development, culture, sport and tourism committee, Bernstein said the new venue would be a competitor for the 40 events.

The panel’s chair, Dee Doocey, said: “If there are only 40 events capable of filling stadia of that size and you then suddenly have just down the road another stadium of similar size, it would seem almost inevitable that one will lose out to the other.”
