The MCC wants a guarantee that two Test matches will be played at Lord’s every summer before going ahead with its planned £400m redevelopment of the ground.
It emerged yesterday that the MCC was looking to turn Lord’s into a state-of-the-art 37,000-seat arena with retractable floodlights, an underground academy and luxury apartments.
The MCC is keen to increase the capacity to stave off competition from revamped grounds such as the Rose Bowl in Southampton and the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff.
The Times reports MCC chief executive Keith Bradshaw saying: “We want a prerequisite before we present our plans to our members.
“It has become more difficult to allocate two Test matches in a six-Test summer and the ECB want a geographical spread around the country, but I am very positive of staging two Tests, which is our preference, or the equivalent in major match days,” (which refers to limited-overs internationals).
Lord’s will host three Tests next summer, but these include a so-called “neutral” match between Australia and Pakistan.
Bradshaw yesterday played down speculation the MCC was planning to sell the naming rights to Lord’s to help finance the redevelopment.
