The new chairman of the Racecourse Association says he wants horse racing to be the second most-watched sport in the UK after football.
Among Ian Barlow’s ambitious targets was to get 10 million people going racing every year.
He said he wanted to see the sport “re-established in the country’s psyche, appearing routinely on the back pages of the newspapers and frequently on the front pages” and also suggested that racing should be “rated by customers as the best value for money of any visitor attraction or sport in the UK”.
Barlow worked for the British Horseracing Authority and its predecessor, the British Horseracing Board, for 15 years before joining the RCA three months ago.
If racing is to reach Barlow’s 10 million target, attendances would need to rise by almost 70% from the current level of around 5.8 million. However, he drew on an example from history to suggest that it can be achieved if all sectors of the industry “have a shared view of our goals”.
“You’ll be familiar with the example of Nasa in the 60s,” Barlow added. “Everyone, from senior executives to receptionists, knew their mission – to get a man on the moon by the end of the decade. Sure, it was just one organisation and we are many. But the principle is the same.”
