UK Sport director of performance Peter Keen has hailed the positive impact National Lottery funding has had on elite sport in this country.
The lottery celebrated its 15th anniversary at the weekend and Keen, a former Olympic coach and performance director at British Cycling, said: “It has transformed the places we do elite sport in this country but above all it has changed the lives of over 3,000 athletes who’ve been able to live the dream as a professional sportsperson.
“The days where you had to compete and train in your own time and out of your own pocket have, for the vast majority of Olympic and Paralympic sports, disappeared. It means sport is now unrecognisable from where it was 15 years ago.”
