The 2010 Asian Games is “going smokeless” after organisers announced that the sale of tobacco products at the event would be prohibited.
The Games, which will take place between November 12 and 27 next year in the city of Guangzhou in Southern China, is the second largest sporting event in the world after the Summer Olympics.
The Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee said in a statement: “Organisers are prohibited from allowing the sale of cigarettes or tobacco products at any athletic venue of the 16th Asian Games.
“The 2010 Games also follows all mandates of the International Olympic Committee in which the organisers are prohibited from accepting sponsorship of the Games by tobacco manufactures.”
The Games is expected to attract 10,000 athletes from 45 member states of the Olympic Council of Asia to compete in 42 events, including 28 Olympic sports.
