Donington’s administrators have welcomed comments by Bernie Ecclestone that the circuit could still hold a grand prix if it finds the right backers.

Donington Ventures Leisure Limited, which owns the leasehold to the circuit, lost a 17-year contract to stage the British Grand Prix after its final attempt to raise funds for track redevelopment fell through last month.

The company went into administration last week and administrator Nigel Price said he was looking for a third party buyer with “vision” who could still bring Formula One to the venue – perhaps in the 2011 season.

F1 commercial rights holder Ecclestone, who has given Silverstone a deadline of December 9 to sign a contract for next year’s British Grand Prix, told the BBC at the weekend that Donington could still host the race in the future “if someone comes along with the right ideas and funding”.

Price was quoted in the London Evening Standard as saying: “I think it’s tremendously encouraging. Without meaning to prejudge anything Bernie might wish to do, he’s clearly shown a desire in the past to put Formula One at Donington.

”Therefore, if we can find someone with the financial clout and drive to get something done and quickly, I’m sure Bernie would consider doing that still.”
