Renault chief executive Carlos Ghosn has dropped the biggest hint yet that the company could walk away from Formula One at the end of the year after questioning the “importance” of the sport.
Renault is considering its position in F1 after the Nelson Picquet Jr race-fixing scandal which saw team boss Flavio Briatore and engineering chief Pat Symonds banned by the FIA.
The company signed a Concorde Agreement in the summer which effectively commits it to the sport until at least 2012, but Toyota made a similar pledge only to announce it was walking away from F1 at the end of the 2009 season.
Ghosn told Forbes India magazine: “F1 is one of the most seen spectacles in the world. It is facing some challenges – challenges on how fair it is and how do you marry F1 with environmental concerns? Can you bring zero emissions through technology? There are lots of questions about F1.
“I don’t think it is going to be very important for anybody if it doesn’t answer some of the concerns that surround F1. I notice that in the last year, three car manufacturers [as well as Toyota BMW and Honda have also quit] have bowed out of F1 – three in one year! That means there are a lot of questions that we need to resolve.”
