The International Cycling Union is demanding new financial guarantees from Astana, leaving the team’s future in doubt.
The Guardian reports that Astana, home to Tour de France winner Alberto Contador, must produce a bank guarantee of its annual budget before the sport’s governing body will renew its ProTour licence.
Kazakhstan’s government last week pledged US$22m in financial support for next season but the country’s cycling federation deputy president Nikolai Proskurin said the ICU’s demand was unreasonable and added that he was not sure Astana could meet today’s (November 25) deadline.
