Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin has died at the age of 85.
Pollin, the longest-serving owner in the NBA, also owned the Washington Capitals in the NHL and the Washington Mystics in the Women’s NBA.
His investment company bought the Baltimore Bullets in 1964 and moved the team to Washington in 1973.
Pollin decided to change its name to the ‘Wizards’ in 1997 because he felt ‘Bullets’ had negative connotations. The franchise won the NBA Championship in 1978, beating the Seattle Supersonics.
