The International Cycling Union (UCI) has renewed Astana’s ProTour licence but has demanded assurances that the team can cover its budget for next year.
It had been speculated that Astana, home to Tour de France winner Alberto Contador, must produce a bank guarantee of its annual budget before the sport’s governing body would give it permission to race next year.
Some of the team’s riders went without pay last year and the UCI said in a statement: “Looking forward to the 2010 season, the UCI requested the Kazakh team [Astana] to provide an additional bank guarantee so that the regrettable situation in 2009 would not be repeated and so that the request for the withdrawal of the Astana licence would not have to be reactivated. The UCI awaits this bank guarantee and is confident it will be provided soon.”
