The Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretary-General on Sport Wilfried Lemke has applauded the International Cricket Council’s efforts to use the game to encourage positive social change.
ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat met Lemke in Dubai last week and told him about various initiatives, including the organisation’s ‘Promoting peace through cricket’ scheme, which has just been shortlisted for the best peace project from an international sports federation at the Peace and Sport Awards 2009.
Lemke said: “The work of the ICC in promoting development and peace objectives through the game of cricket is commendable and I look forward to working with the ICC to help facilitate their programmes in the future.”
Lorgat added: “We already have strong relationships with international agencies and we will continue to foster these so that cricket continues to play its role in promoting social development and peace.”
