The Australian state of Victoria has banned jump racing after the deaths of 20 horses in the last two years.
Members of the racing industry have labelled the decision “unbelievable” and “appalling” but it has been welcomed by animal rights campaigners.
A raft of new safety measures were introduced last year but despite the changes, eight more horses have died this season.
That prompted authorities to launch an urgent investigation, which has led to the abolishment of steeplechasing and hurdle racing from next year.
Neighbouring South Australia, the only other state in the country that allows jump racing, has said its programme will continue and hopes to attract trainers and horses from Victoria.
