Fifa looks set to grant Chile’s participation in the 2010 World Cup after a dispute with domestic club Rangers was resolved.
World football’s governing body had threatened to throw Chile out of the tournament because of Rangers’ decision to take legal action in a bid to avoid relegation.
Fifa does not approve of civil or government intervention in football but spokesman for Chile’s football association Claudio Olmedo said: “The Rangers case has been overcome. It has been withdrawn from the Courts of Justice.”
Rangers were relegated after they were docked three points for fielding one foreign player too many in a match.
Fifa was unhappy with the club’s proposed legal action and last week wrote to the Chilean Football Association urging it to persuade Rangers to drop the case.
