Mario Theissen has decided to stay with BMW despite its decision to pull out of Formula One, ending his 20-year association with the sport.
The German, who has been team principal of BMW’s F1 operation since it bought Sauber in 2005, will stay on as the company’s motorsport director even though it has sold the F1 team back to Peter Sauber.
BMW revealed it was quitting the sport in the summer and a spokesman said: “After BMW announced they were pulling out, it was left up to Mario to decide and he has said he will stay as motorsport director.”
Theissen has been with BMW since 1977 and involved in its F1 activities for the last 20 years. He led the team to second place in the constructors’ championship in 2007.
