Fiji is to lodge an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport against its ban from next year’s Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games Federation suspended Fiji’s membership, ruling the country’s athletes out of the 2010 Games in Delhi, after it was banned from the Commonwealth for failing to meet certain conditions, including holding early democratic elections.
But the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) revealed today (December 1) that it plans to appeal.
FASANOC president Vidya Lakhan said in a statement: “We again reiterate our position: we see CHOGM’s [the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting] stance in this matter as political interference in sports. We will therefore now take our case to Court of Arbitration for Sport.”
Lakhan had earlier told reporters: “We are of the firm belief that the Commonwealth Games Federation cannot deny us participation purely for the reason that they do not like Fijian politics.
“We have for the past weeks been consulting our own lawyers, getting interpretations and seeking legal views from other people.
“We are assured that we have a very, very strong case, so based on that we are going to the Court of Arbitration for Sport for the decision.”
