The Rugby Football Union has backed the launch of the first ever rugby sevens series in the UK.
The UK National Sevens Series will begin next year with tournaments in London, Bath, Manchester and Newquay.
It will feature 10 teams, including national-level players from across the UK, competing for regional tournament honours and the overall series title.
Promoter Ultimate Rugby Sevens (UR7s) also plans to launch the series in Wales and Scotland in the coming seasons.
It is hoped the series will build on the growing popularity of rugby sevens, which will be included in the Olympic Games in 2016.
“The announcement of the UK National Series is a huge step forward for rugby sevens in the UK,” said Ben Ryan, England Rugby Union sevens coach and RFU National Academy coach. “It will give sevens a stronger platform in this country and give increased opportunities for more players to experience this great sport.”
UR7s is now looking for sponsors and partners for the series.
