Lord Coe has said that the London 2012 Olympics will create its own legacy and not try to compete with last year’s Beijing Games.
China captured the imagination of the world last year with an extravagant opening ceremony and some iconic Olympics venues, such as the Bird’s Nest stadium and the Water Cube.
And a host of world records from the likes of Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps ensured that Beijing will go down as one of the most memorable Games of modern times.
Coe said: “Beijing was spectacular. The amount of detailed planning and the performance of the athletes were spectacular. We’ll also be different.
“What we absolutely recognise, and the International Olympic Committee recognises, is that we will never see a Games like the Beijing Olympics again.
“That doesn’t make it any better or worse for cities coming after. Each Games is different. That is the beauty of the Olympic movement.
“Each one is different and reflects in large part the communities that stage it. Cultural diversity will be key to the [2012] Games as there are around 300 different communities in London and 200 languages are spoken.”
