Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who played an integral role in bringing the 2010 World Cup to South Africa, has said he will back Australia’s bid to host the tournament in 2018 or 2022.
Nobel Peace Prize winner Tutu, who has vowed to travel to Zurich for next year’s vote, is supporting Australia because, like Africa, it has never staged the World Cup before.
Wearing a Socceroos shirt with the bid slogan “Come Play”, he met Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy and chief executive Ben Buckley at a children’s hospital in Cape Town, where Lowy presented a cheque for £82,000 to support the hospital.
Tutu said: “I will be happy to come to Zurich to support you in the same way you have supported this foundation [the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital].”
Lowy added: “Africa has given football some of the world’s best players over the years and this is a gesture that also recognises Africa’s contribution to our game. It must be our legacy and it is Australia’s long-standing policy to help where help is most needed.”
