Fifa will not go ahead with a plan to use extra officials to assist referees at the 2010 World Cup – but will look into whether it is a more effective solution than video technology with a view to introducing one or the other at future tournaments.
Fifa’s executive committee had discussed the idea of bringing in goal-line officials at the World Cup in South Africa after the controversy over Thierry Henry’s handball against the Republic of Ireland.
The tactic of using two additional officials has been trialled in the Europa League this season, but Fifa president Sepp Blatter said that an inquiry would be carried out into the benefits of that system and video technology before any decisions were taken.
He added: “The committee was of the opinion that we are at a crossroads: where shall we go with refereeing in the future?
“The game at the highest level is so tense that it is impossible for one referee and his assistants to see everything.
“[But] we have decided that for World Cup 2010, there will be no change in refereeing. We will still have one referee and two assistants.”
Henry, meanwhile, will be investigated by Fifa’s disciplinary committee over the handball, though Blatter pointed it out that there was no guarantee he would be banned if found guilty.
