Australia is bringing out the big guns in its bid to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022, using film star Nicole Kidman in a promotional film that will be shown just before the draw for the 2010 tournament tomorrow (December 4).
In the film, Kidman says a World Cup in Australia would be “fun, relaxed, safe and secure”.
With England drafting in the world’s most famous footballer David Beckham to boost its stuttering hopes, Australia bid chairman Frank Lowy hopes Kidman will bring some star quality to its campaign and help build on recent momentum.
“We have gone from nowhere to maybe among the top two or three or four,” said Lowy.
The film featuring Kidman was premiered at a reception hosted by Australia’s high commissioner to South Africa and attended by several of the 24 members of Fifa’s executive committee who will decide on the 2018 and 2022 hosts in December next year.
“I think they were very impressed,” Lowy added. “I must say that the sympathy for Australia is very good. I think our points are sinking in.”
Australia and the other candidates will each present a four-minute film at a Fifa-organised event tomorrow before officially meeting the media for the first time.
