Fifa has announced that the total prize money for next year’s World Cup in South Africa will be $420m – a 61 per cent increase on the $261m that was awarded in 2006.
The winning team next summer will get $30m and the beaten finalists $24m, while semi-finalists will collect $20m, quarter-finalists $18m and teams that get knocked out in the second round $9m.
Even countries that do not make it past the group stage will receive $8m, plus the $1m advance payment given to all nations that qualified for the tournament.
Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke also announced that $40m had been allocated for clubs whose players represent their national teams. Part of this amount was to cover the cost of insuring those players, he said.
