David Beckham has pledged to do all he can to help England win the race to host the 2018 World Cup.
Beckham is in South Africa with Lord Triesman to help promote the bid at today’s (December 4) draw for the 2010 tournament.
He told the BBC: “I’m well aware how important it is for our country and will do all I can. It’s difficult to get the World Cup to our country, but I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think we could.”
The former England captain was an ambassador for the successful London 2012 Olympics campaign, and now has a similar role in the World Cup bid.
“Football is in our culture, in our DNA,” he continued. “It’s in us from the moment we are brought into this world and it’s something we will always have.
“England is one of the few countries with its stadia and its infrastructure that could host a World Cup almost immediately.
“The diversity of cultures around our country is a big thing as well. There are not many countries where you can have Brazil and Portugal and so on coming to our country and for there to be lots of their fans already there. That’s a special thing for us.”
