Graham Gooch believes cricket’s powers-that-be face a tough task if Test cricket is to remain at the pinnacle of the sport in the face of competition from Twenty20.

Gooch, who is England’s leading run scorer in Test matches, thinks more needs to be done to promote the longer form of the game.

“I have no problem with Twenty20 cricket – it’s exciting and there are skills that come into it which improve the game generally,” he said. “But the challenge for the administrators is to keep the profile of Test cricket where most players of my generation would like, and that is at the top of the sport.

“The danger is players could opt for the 20-over game. Some might decide, ‘Right, that’s going to be my bag, that’s what I’m going to do and I am not going to play the longer form of the game’. There is a danger that that could dilute the quality of players playing Test cricket.”
