Pakistan cricket ban costs $125m
 08/12/2009

The Pakistan Cricket Board has lost US$125m – or 71 per cent of its total revenues – as a result of the ban on hosting international matches following the terror attacks on the Sri Lankan team earlier this year.

In a meeting with an ICC task force, PCB chairman Ijaz Butt revealed that the loss of income from a broadcasting deal with Ten Sports was a significant factor.

Pakistan has lost hosting rights to the 2008 Champions Trophy and the 2011 World Cup, as well as a series of tours, over security concerns, while ties with rivals India are currently on hold. The PCB lost about $40m alone when India cancelled a tour of Pakistan in January.

The five-year deal with Ten Sports was worth approximately $140m and the possibility of a series between Pakistan and an ICC World XI to help replace the loss of income was discussed at the meeting in Dubai.

Butt said: “We made a detailed presentation to the ICC task force of our own views on the situation. So far we have suffered a lot of losses because of postponements, relocations and cancellations and that is having an impact on domestic and junior cricket.”

The task force, which comprises Ranjan Madugalle, Ramiz Raja, Mike Brearley, Dave Richardson and Giles Clarke, will now make a list of recommendations to the ICC.
