Fifa has said that applications for World Cup tickets have soared following last week’s draw.
About one million tickets went on sale after Friday’s draw in Cape Town and almost 220,000 applications were made within 48 hours, according to world football’s governing body.
Ticket applications can be made until January 22 after which time a lottery will decide the successful fans.
South African organisers have repeated appeals to locals to buy tickets, fearing that home fans will be outnumbered by foreign supporters. South African residents bought just over half of the 674,403 tickets sold in the first two phases of sales.
Ticket prices range from $20 to $900, a huge jump from what locals are used to paying to watch domestic football.
