London 2012 organisers have pledged to serve the “best of British” food during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In a ‘food vision’ document published yesterday (Dec 7), the London 2012 Organising Committee said all dairy products, beef, lamb and poultry served at the Games must be British.

In addition, bananas, tea, coffee and sugar will be Fairtrade and cheese such as cheddar must be British.

The process to find catering suppliers is now underway, with opportunities listed through the London 2012 Business Network. The chosen caterers will join London 2012 commercial partners Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Cadbury, who will also be supplying food and drink and will provide the only branded products on sale.

London 2012 chief executive Paul Deighton said: “We want to ensure everyone at the Games has a fantastic experience and key to that is the food and drink that’s available – we want it to be affordable, sustainable and celebrating the fantastic diversity and quality of what Britain has to offer.”

However, the news that one in five meals served to fans at the Games will come from McDonald’s has worried health campaigners.

Lord Coe and Olympics minister Tessa Jowell have stated that improved health across the nation will be one of the main legacies of hosting the Games.

But Ruairi O’Connor, head of policy at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Health does not seem to be high on their agenda. The focus on fast food, where the primary products are high in fat, sugar and salt, means we question whether the health legacy which has been promised will be fulfilled.”
