Sweden and Norway’s joint bid to host the Euro 2016 football championships looks to be over after the countries’ governments declined a request for funding.
Bid officials wanted help upgrading stadiums and infrastructure but the two governments said at a meeting on Wednesday (Dec 9) that they could not provide the money needed.
Although the decision is still to be made official, the Swedish Football Federation said in a statement: “During a meeting in Oslo on Wednesday with the participation of the ministries of culture of Norway and Sweden, as well as the Norwegian and Swedish football federations, the two governments announced that they intend to say no to the public money requested by municipalities to finance infrastructure work linked to the candidature for the organisation of Euro 2016.
“The Swedish Football Federation will now await the Government’s formal decision before deciding how the process should continue. But the decision made today makes the candidature impossible.”
France and Italy now appear favourites to host the tournament, and Turkey is also in the running. The Uefa executive committee will make a decision at the end of May.
