The panel tasked by the Government with looking into ways of dealing with match-fixing in sport is reportedly set to recommend the creation of a single unit dedicated to investigating corruption in sports betting.
The Guardian claims that the panel, chaired by former Liverpool and Premier League chief executive Rick Parry, has concluded that a single unit with investigative powers would be the most effective way of handling the growing threat following a series of allegations involving sports such as football, horse racing, tennis, cricket and snooker.
A number of sports, including football and horse racing, have put their own integrity arrangements in place to try to combat the problem and would have to be convinced that a new unit would be more successful in the fight against corruption.
The newspaper reports that Parry will deliver his recommendations to the sports minister, Gerry Sutcliffe, before the end of the year.
