The International Rowing Federation (FISA) is overhauling the finals programme at the Olympics and World Championships in an attempt to raise the profile of the sport.
Olympic rowing finals will now take place over four days after rowing’s governing body consulted broadcasting and media experts, who recommended more finals and shorter programming.
The decision has been taken following discussions with the International Olympic Committee and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games.
A similar proposal has been put forward for the World Championships with the exact scenario to be decided in January. It is possible that the change could be implemented as early as the 2010 World Rowing Championships.
The format of the three annual Rowing World Cup events will also be reviewed to find ways to attract more broadcasting from general interest television channels. The main idea is to create a one-hour programme featuring the ‘blue ribbon’ events, the singles and the eights.
National rowing federations have been asked to submit comments to FISA by January 15 with the FISA Council meeting again on January 22 to finalise the programmes for the 2010 World Rowing events.
