Next year’s America’s Cup will take place in Valencia rather than the United Arab Emirates after a ruling by the Supreme Court of the State of New York.
Holders Alinghi wanted the competition to be held in the Middle East but the court said it must be staged in either the southern hemisphere or Valencia.
A 19th century document preventing the event taking place in the northern hemisphere between November 1 and May 1 dashed hopes of a race in the UAE.
However, the Spanish port of Valencia is considered acceptable, despite its northern hemisphere location, as it staged the most recent race in 2007.
Alinghi appealed but a 4-0 ruling at the Supreme Court puts an end to the matter.
The Swiss team will take on American rivals Oracle in the 33rd staging of the competition.
