The Caribbean National Olympic Committee (CANOC) has said it will only support Trinidad and Tobago’s planned bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games if the country stages a Caribbean Games first.
CANOC president Steve Stoute stated: “It is the general view that the Caribbean would want to see Trinidad and Tobago host a Caribbean Games before it receives the support of the Caribbean Commonwealth countries.”
The inaugural Caribbean Games scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago last year was called off because of swine-flu concerns in the country.
Stoute added: “Many countries spent quite a lot of money in preparation for the Games on things like [souvenir] pins, apparel, training and preparation which has basically gone down the tube. All the countries involved have expended funds.”
