Head of the Jamaican Football Association Horace Burrell believes countries bidding to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups must demonstrate that they support the development of football if their campaigns are to succeed.

Burrell, whose boss is influential Fifa executive committee member Jack Warner, said: “Only on that basis and that basis alone do I think the football World Cup host can be chosen.”

Warner was initially critical of England’s bid but has since said it is the country’s “time” to host the tournament, while also praising Australia’s campaign, saying it has an “excellent chance” of winning the vote.

But Burrell has denied that Warner’s stance has been inconsistent. “It’s a process and I believe Jack Warner is 100 per cent correct in not taking sides or being in any way partisan or unbalanced in his views,” he added.

“At the end of the day, whichever country comes up with the best bid will get his support.”
