The US Olympic Committee (USOC) is close to appointing a new chief executive that it hopes will improve its relations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Chicago lost out in the first round of voting for the 2016 Olympic Games, which was eventually won by Rio de Janeiro, and critics claim that USOC’s relationship with the IOC was the over-riding factor.
USOC chairman Larry Probst insisted he was “not going anywhere” but admitted that there was work to be done and that the new chief executive would have an integral role to play.
“Clearly we need to do better and we understand that,” Probst said.
USOC has narrowed about 140 candidates for the role down to a shortlist who will be interviewed in the coming weeks with an appointment expected in early January.
Among the possible choices are NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol, National Basketball Association commissioner David Stern and Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber.
