Finnish broadcaster MTV3 has denied that it would have pulled the plug on its Formula 1 coverage if Heikki Kovalainen had not won a race seat for next season.
With Kimi Raikkonen moving to rallying and Kovalainen losing his McLaren drive to world champion Jenson Button, it was rumoured that the channel was planning to scale back or even end it involvement in F1.
As it is, Kovalainen has just signed to drive for the new Lotus team but the broadcaster’s head of sports Tatu Lehmuskallio has said that MTV3’s coverage is not dependant on the presence of particular drivers on the grid.
“Finnish participation and success is of course important, but it’s not critical,” he added.
“Kovalainen’s three-year contract is a good thing, but our agreement [with F1] and his contract are not at all connected.”
