The Olympic Council of Ireland has chosen former world champion long-distance runner Sonia O’Sullivan to lead the Irish team at the London 2012 Olympics.
O’Sullivan, who lives in south-west London, has been appointed chef de mission and will work alongside OCI chief executive Stephen Martin and sports director Martin Burke.
She took on a similar role during the European Youth Olympic Festival in Tampere earlier this year.
Jamie Costin, chairman of the Irish Olympic Athletes Commission, said: “Sonia is a sporting legend and she will ensure the Irish team’s preparations and participation at the London Olympics will be totally athlete focused. This is a superb move by the OCI.”
The OCI has split the role ahead of next year’s Winter Olympics with former bobsleigher and long jumper Siobhan Hoey leading the team in Canada next February.
OCI president Pat Hickey added: “These selections allow us to take a fresh and dynamic approach to the many performance challenges that face our athletes, especially for the London Games.”
