Officials in Singapore hope that a successful Youth Olympic Games this year will help it bid for bigger sporting events in the future.
The country had been scheduled to host the South East Asian Games in either 2013 or 2015 but that now seems unlikely due to delays to the Sports Hub, which is supposed to replace the national stadium.
However, with 500 full-time staff and 20,000 volunteers working at the Youth Olympics in August, the desire is there to stage bigger events with a bid for the Asian Games itself likely at some point during the next decade.
Teo Ser Luck, senior parliamentary secretary for community development, youth and sports ministry, said: “I foresee that to satisfy the appetite of these volunteers and these staff, and also to satisfy the appetite of the public, we have to go for a bigger Games. Could it be a possibility that we look at something bigger? Could it be Asian Games?”
About 3,500 athletes will compete in 26 sports at the Youth Games this year, while 13,000 sportsmen and women took part in 39 events at the last Asian Games in Doha.
