Hiroshima and Nagasaki’s hopes of staging Olympic competition may not be over after Tokyo’s governor said both cities could be involved if Japan’s capital was chosen to host the 2020 Games.

A joint bid from Hiroshima and Nagasaki has just been rejected by the Japanese Olympic Committee because the Olympic charter states that only one city can host the Games.

There have since been suggestions that one or both could launch separate bids, but Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara said the two cities could stage some events if Tokyo was selected as Japan’s preferred candidate for the 2020 race.

“If Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Tokyo were all bidding for the Olympics, then Tokyo would probably win,” he added. “Once Tokyo puts its hat in the international bidding ring then it would be able to get both Hiroshima and Nagasaki involved.”
