Virgin Racing sporting director John Booth has said that Sir Richard Branson’s involvement with the fledgling Formula 1 team has been a major help in attracting sponsors.
Booth’s Manor GP was rebranded as Virgin Racing in December after months of speculation about Branson’s Formula 1 plans. Virgin had previously sponsored Brawn GP (now Mercedes) but had been widely expected to team up with Manor.
“It was the worst-kept secret in motorsport, wasn’t it?” admitted Booth to Crash.net Radio. “It gives us tremendous credibility out there. It was a suitable vehicle to use Manor for the entry, but it was possibly always the plan for that to change.
“To have somebody like Sir Richard and Virgin on board is a dream come true for us. When you watch Sir Richard in interviews, he’s a global media figure, and one of the most recognised faces on the planet. Sponsors want to be with him, and he just brings a real buzz to the whole operation.”
The team unveiled a host of sponsors at its launch last month, including tyre recycling company Carbon Green, shampoo brand Clear, IT services company CSC, fashion brand Kappa and green investment firm Oxigen Investments.
