Puma is launching the world’s first ‘continental football kit’ to support the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The ‘Unity Kit’ kit will be the third strip to the 12 African football nations sponsored by Puma – which include Cameroon, Ghana and the Ivory Coast – and is the first international playing kit to be shared by 12 national teams across a continent.
Puma says that by supporting the kit, African teams are not only uniting as a powerful force in world football, but also raising awareness of the importance of environmental issues. A portion of the proceeds from sales of replica Unity Kits will help fund biodiversity programmes worldwide
This year is the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB), which is a global campaign launched by the United Nations for 2010 to help raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity and to encourage worldwide action to protect flora, fauna and the habitats in which they are found.
It is also a big year for African football, with the Africa Cup of Nations having just kicked off in Angola and the World Cup taking place in South Africa this summer.
Chairman and chief executive of Puma Jochen Zeitz said: “In 2010, Africa will be at the centre of the footballing world.
“The release of the Africa Unity Kit is a powerful statement for Puma. We are creating a unique kit embracing the diversity of Africa’s teams while valuing the unity of players and supporters towards a common goal.
“Biodiversity, and therefore valuing and protecting all life on our planet, is a huge issue, not only in Africa, but around the world – and we are proud to partner with UNEP to raise both awareness and funds through the sale of our Unity products.”
