US television network NBC has said that it will lose money on the Winter Olympics for the first time this year.
NBC paid a record $2.2bn for the broadcast rights to the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Winter Games, which start in Vancouver in February.
But NBC Olympics executive producer Dick Ebersol said that, although advertising sales for the three-week coverage of the Games had picked up, the network would end up in the red, partly because of higher licensing fees.
