Australia World Cup bid chief executive Ben Buckley claims the Socceroos are now the country’s favourite national sports team, illustrating the growing passion for football Down Under.
Buckley cites a survey by Fox Sports Australia that voted the Socceroos’ 2006 World Cup campaign the ‘sports story of the decade’.
He told World Football Insider: “I think the results of the survey show just how much support there is for football and the national team within the Australian community.
“Research has shown consistently for the past three to four years that the Socceroos are Australia’s favourite national team.
“It is one of the reasons why bidding for the World Cup in 2018 or 2022 is so important to us.
“We believe that hosting such an event could take the game even further in the Australian sporting landscape, which is one of the most competitive in the world.”
