England’s RBS Six Nations match against Wales in February will be Europe’s first live 3D sports broadcast.
England team sponsor O2 is behind the initiative, which will see the match – and England’s game with Ireland in the same competition – shown in 3D at 40 Odeon and Cineworld cinemas across the country.
Rugby Football Union operations director Paul Vaughan said: “This demonstrates that England Rugby has a rich history and an even richer future with exciting new developments such as O2’s 3D screenings. I hope rugby fans will pack cinemas across the country to support the team and mark this milestone.”
3DTV is set to be this year’s must-have gadget following the success of James Cameron’s Avatar film at cinemas.
ESPN announced earlier in January that it was launching a 3D service in June. The broadcaster will show at least 85 live sporting events in 3D this year, starting with up to 25 matches at the World Cup in South Africa.
