Everton says it has held “positive” talks with Liverpool City Council over a new stadium.
The council previously opposed the club’s application to build a new ground in Kirkby and the proposal was subsequently rejected by the Government.
The Kirkby scheme included a 50,000-seater stadium alongside a large Tesco superstore and other shops but was turned down by communities secretary John Denham because of possible effects on the “vitality and viability” of local communities.
New locations are understood to have been discussed at the latest talks.
Everton wants to increase capacity and corporate facilities at its home games but is unable to do so at current ground Goodison Park. It claims that the 40,100 capacity is “a huge financial disadvantage to overcome”.
Neighbours Liverpool had plans for a 60,000-seater ground on Stanley Park approved in May 2008, although building work has not yet started.
Everton said it would consider sharing a ground with its city rivals, but Liverpool has insisted it intends to retain sole use of the stadium.
