Chairman of Mexico’s National Sports Commission Bernardo de la Garza has said that Guadalajara remains committed to hosting the 2014 Youth Olympic Games despite claims it was preparing to quit the race.
The city is competing against Poznan in Poland and China’s Nanjing to host the second edition of the Games, but speculation was mounting that it was going to pull out after the International Olympic Committee’s latest evaluation claimed that Nanjing presented the least risk to the IOC.
De la Garza insisted that both the Pan Am Games Organizing Committee and the Guadalajara 2014 bid committee will work hard to turn the tables back in Mexico’s favour.
“There will always be some who want to put their personal interests above the general interest but that does not have to cancel a project of that magnitude,” he said.
“This is a national project and I will hold on to the hope of winning right until the end.”
Mayor of Guadalajara Aristoteles Sandoval, who was reportedly weighing up whether to withdraw, is now quoted as saying: “We remain firm in our intentions to make Guadalajara 2014 a reality.”
The host city for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games will be announced on February 10.
