Vancouver 2010 officials have been forced to close the Winter Olympic snowboard and freestyle skiing venue to the public to preserve the snow.
Cypress Mountain closed to the public on Wednesday (Jan 13), 17 days earlier than planned, as an “intensive snow salvage project” began.
The area has been experiencing warm and wet weather in recent days, and Vancouver organiser Tim Gayda said: “Closing early is the responsible thing to do, given the recent weather.” The Winter Games start on February 12.
Cypress Mountain artificially generates snow with a ‘snowmaking reservoir’ of more than 22.7 million litres of water, but recent weather has seen the condition of snow on the ground deteriorate. Olympic organisers have been stockpiling snow at higher altitudes as a precaution.
The venue had already closed for two days earlier in the week after heavy rain.
